Mahatama Gandhi was opposed to the concept of partition as it contradicted his vision of religious unity.

Gandhi’s life and teachings inspired many who specifically referred to Gandhi as their mentor or who dedicated their lives to spreading Gandhi’s ideas. It is only because of his ideology and true actions, he was decorated with the title of Father of the Nation.

The partition of Indian sub-continent in 1947 following World War II is the most tragic of all political events to affect India in its long political history.

Whether the partition was wise or it was done too soon is still under debated at the political fronts when even after more than six decades, we have not been able to settle the boundary which led to endless boundary disputes though it was the logical outcome of Britian’s policies of dividing and ruling. Sometimes, it is felt that boundary issues were left unresolved intentionally so that people of both the countries should realize that British rule was better in the centuries to come. It is the teachings of non-violence by Gandhi which helped India to gain independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

That is why, even Obama, President of US when asked a question posed on him as to who was the one person, dead or live, that he would choose to dine with and his quick reply was ‘Gandhi’.

When India and Pakistan have been separated against the wishes of Indian leaders, the need of the hour is that the people of both the countries should save it from internal and external threats, without paying any further price of innocent people. It will be a big tribute to Mahatama Gandhi, a dream of independent India.
